Has Iran Created a ‘Taco Moment’ for Trump? Decoding Strategies and Limits of Military Power

Four weeks into the coordinated US-Israeli air campaign against the Islamic Republic of Iran, a clear strategic lesson emerges: tactical air superiority cannot substitute for a viable political end-state. Has Iran Created a ‘Taco Moment’ for Trump? Decoding Strategies and Limits of Military Power

By Maj Gen (Dr.) S. B. Asthana (Veteran)

Backdrop: It seems Iranian resilience, counter-threats and strikes like Dimona have brought a “TACO” (Trump Always Chickens Out) moment. Is the war heading towards de-escalation or is Trump buying time?

Four weeks into the coordinated US-Israeli air campaign against the Islamic Republic of Iran, a clear strategic lesson emerges: tactical air superiority cannot substitute for a viable political end-state. Operations
“Epic Fury”
and “Rising Lion”
have showcased high-intensity degradation, yet they have not led to systemic collapse in Tehran.

A Clash of Strategic Cultures

This is a clash between “Shock and Awe” and Iran’s
“Mosaic Defence”—a strategy utilizing geographic depth and asymmetric defiance. Despite the removal of top leadership, drone swarms and marine disruption persist.

Strategic Miscalculation & JCPoA

The roots of this confrontation trace back to the 2018 unilateral withdrawal from the
JCPoA.
By abandoning a multilateral framework, Washington created a strategic vacuum. “Maximum Pressure” has failed to produce a “better deal,” making the progression to military strikes inevitable and flawed.

The Intelligence Gap

The justification for “imminent threat” remains thin. Key US officials, including
Joe Kent
and Tulsi Gabbard, previously indicated that Iran posed no immediate ICBM threat to the American mainland. This suggests broader strategic objectives: disrupting Chinese energy lifelines and preserving the petrodollar.

The ‘Unintended Unifier’ & Humanitarian Cost

Military science teaches us to identify the “Centre of Gravity.” While the coalition targeted the regime, collateral damage—including the tragic deaths of schoolgirls in
Minab—has shifted the center of gravity to the Iranian people’s sense of national sovereignty.

Indian Strategic Calculations

The energy dependence of India on the Persian Gulf makes this conflict a direct threat. Connectivity projects like the Chabahar Port and INSTC face existential uncertainty. India’s exercise of “Strategic Autonomy” has been vindicated as it navigates this economic and energy crisis.
